Once I fully appreciated the predator vs. prey distinction, I started seeing prey talk everywhere.
Prey animals care about two things: having the tasty grass instead of the boring grass, and being in the middle of the herd instead of at the edges. In the middle it's warm and it's almost impossible for a predator to reach.
If you're at the fringes of {{society}}, then the scawwy scawwy pwedatoors might eat yoo. Oooh nooo!

The larger the herd, the smaller the fringes as a proportion of the total herd, and the harder it is to be pushed out of the warm middle.

feels like the real reason why most? people can't detect the problem with ponzi s or MLMs or the stock market is related to this. 'more people can't possibly be a problem, value is always free and unrelated'
To them, there genuinely is no problem. Line go down? Numbers aren't even real bro, lol. Herd go up.
They would appreciate numbers if other herd members had theirs go up, but if everyone has them go down at the same time, there's nobody who can brag, thus nothing to envy.
They understand line go up just enough to ensure they want everyone in the ponzi scheme, so everyone goes down at once.
In turn, why they hate short sellers so much.
