The killer app that made either erectus or sapiens was patriarchy. The women are still adapted to matriarchy, because patriarchy, the land of dowdy women, justice, and cooperation, doesn't particularly select for women's preferences. Let's also mention, up front, how the men who could reasonably know a child was his was least likely to have to pay for anything. Off topic: Thoughts on Characteristics of beauty and why such. When something is beautiful, it is seemingly necessarily inefficient.
Take a digital picture, it is not pretty if all the pixels are the same, and neither if all pixels are randomly different. A pretty picture must consist of different heterogenous parts where you notice there is a pattern, but have some difficulty predicting one half of picture from the other, so as to not be immediately boring. And it is the same with music, there needs to be a pattern which is not too predictable, the complexity just high enough, and the break from pattern just frequent enough to make it so, but not more. Also just the right amount of contrast between opposites, as opposed to seamless transition is beauty-enhancing in both cases.
Meanwhile efficiency is either simplicity, internal homogeneity of parts and highest possible predictability if the task is rearranging pieces of matter, such as with machinery, or if the task is to process or transmit information than maximum complexity within available space is called for, which according to information theory, is achieved when the signal is almost indistinguishable from noise, which in visual form would look like the picture with each pixel different, which is what QR codes are.
So I hypothesise that beauty is what is furthermost from both types of efficiency, both the all-pixels-same material one and the all-pixels-different informational one, that dissipating copious amounts of entropy naturally creates it, as well as that humans evolve to appreciate it because beautiful environments, such as old, complex Ecosystems, are frendlier towards inteligent creatures due to their manipulable complexity, and that intelligence naturally tends to consume beauty and create efficiency, living off the process, such as when rainforest is replaced with a plantation and a medieval town with Square grid concrete blocks, or artisanal manufacture with production-line large factories, such that intelligence creates environment where the benefit of intelligence is lesser, but neither does brute force works because machines have more of that, leaving only ever greater intelligence as an adaptation.
The way for humans to recreate beauty seems to be to adapt to local present conditions, and not to attempt wide scale uniformity or Universal efficiency, or spend resources trying to make the future predictable with restrictions and Control enabling planning beyond what is easy or indeed profitable to plan. This means globalization, and especially global governance, as practiced by governments and corporations should appear massively uglifying, since e.g. corporations are all about implementing the same considered most efficient procedures universally and in as uniform a manner as possible, so that everything can be planned from across the globe, and governments help them with this. Although people were like that already I think.

What maximizes entropy is deliberately creating order, and the more complex or layered the order, the more entropy is created.
Making everything monotonous is fairly easy: purify and freeze. Letting stuff stay warm and instead controlling the entropy is several levels higher. Capturing and corralling the entropy, see?
Art is more expensive than function because it's more work. Creates more entropy. Profit is a kind of efficiency and is a vice if it's not being used to fund more entropy creation.

Depends entirely on what they're spending the efficiency on. Also, not Capitalist. Capitalism has never been tried. Also, not efficient. Modern corporations are bureaucracies, which are wasteful. Normally if your boss has a bunch of performance metrics it's used for bullying, not for productivity.
Maybe certain niche engineering departments are still interested in efficiency. E.g...not !!american!! car companies
