It might be not the sugar itself, but unvetted contaminates coming from the industrial sugar refining process. Fine metal particles, perhaps.
It could also be the fact sugar is processed in third world countries by third world workers. Safety guidelines; lol, great joke.
Or both.

The people who believe sugar is a poison are using artificial sugar substitutes that are the actual poison.
Sugar is solidified plant juice. Plants are usually poisonous to a degree when consumed or even touched; most of those we eat are specifically signalling poison by their taste and we eat them because of that (think nightshades).
Besides, sugar cane is an evil, gigantic weed that leaves your hands full of splinters when you merely graze them against the leaves. I know it, saw it as a kid, in a backyard of all places. If you think about it for a while it's obvious the thing doesn't want to be eaten. So sugar is probably poisonous by itself.
Sugar isn't unique to sugarcane, it's simply the cheapest thing to extract it from.
Crabs, and turtles especially, are delicious. Due to the shells, they don't have to evolve to be unappetizing. Because sugarcane is so difficult to handle, it can afford to have a high bank balance.
By the way we normally avoid nightshades. You might not, but we do. E.g. tomatoes have way too much vitamin A.
I assume if you like potatoes it's because you hate yourself.
