Evil Spirits are Bacteria-Shaped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 It's the new testament, where evil spirits primarily cause disease and madness...just like the Greeks believed and especially the Semitic peoples.

 Steelman: I still believe mental and physical disease are caused by evil spirits, except it turns out you can kill evil spirits with antibiotics. All hail the sacred penicillin.

 You can question whether the Greeks would have agreed that penicillin is holy, but if they wouldn't, they were wrong. They're ontologically committed to it. There's nothing inherently incorrect about the idea of evil spirits provided you're careful about how you define evil and spirits. ("Spirit" means air or breath so I guess technically only airborne/respiratory infections are evil spirits per se.) 

 Also radiation. Alpha, beta, gamma: all kill evil spirits. It is holy. UV is especially effective against evil spirits outside a host.

 Note that the foul energies get into your body in the first place because you have profaned it. You ate unclean or inglorious food. Mayhap you honoured Great Sol too little.

 Perhaps this is the way to use "sacrifice" correctly: having profaned your body and cultivated an infection, you must sacrifice to become pure again. Either you must sacrifice time and comfort, or you must sacrifice your healthy gut flora to penicillin. You already screwed up too much to do it the easy way.

 Simply praying for the evil spirits to be cast out won't work. If you were in any position to ask the heavens for favours, you wouldn't have become sick in the first place. "I wish I hadn't profaned yourself." Yeah okay, but that already happened. Even the greatest gods can't change the past, for it is contrary to free will.

 What is profanity? It is a prayer asking to be cursed and diseased. You can't immediately turn around and pray for the opposite. Well, you can, but it won't work. This is real simple: imagine praying to your mom to be driven to the toy store, but when you get there, you immediately pray to be driven back. This isn't a valid prayer, this is a shortcut for upsetting your mom. It will be taken as a prayer to have your mom be mad at you and will very likely be answered. The gods have incomprehensible generosity but even they aren't going to look favourably on a prayer asking them to waste their time.
