The child laughs at the profound. They laugh partly because they don't get it, and partly because they exactly get it: the profound is mocking their childish shallowness simply by existing. The laughter is cope, trying to paper over a narcissistic injury. The child laughs at the awesome, in the hope that they convince everyone else to give up ever expecting them to partake of awe.
